Spill Response & Oil Pollution Prevention Plan 


This Prevention plan forms part of the RPNYC Environmental Framework.

 

Purpose 

To prevent, respond to, and minimize the impact of oil and fuel spills within RPNYC’s operational and competitive areas — including prior, during and after sailing events. 

 

Risk Context 

  • Sources of risk: Refuelling, engine maintenance, bilge discharge, accidental spills 

  • High-risk zones: Wellington Ocean Sports, moorings and berths occupied by Club boats; Boat shed area 

  • Reputation impact: Pollution incidents can damage the environment, community support and Club reputation 

 

Prevention Measures 

Infrastructure & Equipment 

  • Spill kits placed at key locations: Te Ruru boat shed, WOS office, Wardroom 

  • Biodegradable cleaning products available 

Member & Staff Practices 

  • Refueling protocols: Nozzle control, drip trays 

  • Engine maintenance done only within Chaffers or Evans Bay hard 

  • Waste oil and filters disposed of via approved collection points 

Education & Engagement 

  • “Clean Boating” tips shared in newsletters  

  • Spill prevention included WOS Programmes 

  • Clean & Green Sailor Award reinforces best practice behavior
