Sailing - it's what we do

If you're into sailing, or want to be, then we have a comprehensive programme with a wide variety of sailing opportunities, including round-the-cans and harbour races, regattas, offshore races, social sailing, night races, and cruising. Our calendar caters to everyone from old salts to beginners.

Rum racing

Rum Races are short races on Friday evenings during the Daylight Saving (late Spring, Summer, and early Autumn) period. Starting and finishing in the inner harbour in front of the Clubhouse, they're meant to be a fun way to break from the working week and kickstart your weekend.

While rum racing may be casual, the competitive spirit still runs strong as sailors vie for bragging rights and the titular prize of rum. However, the true reward lies in the shared experience of sailing with friends and sharing the joy of being on the water. Rum racing continues to thrive as a beloved pastime among sailors worldwide.

Whether you’re a seasoned racer, a cruiser, or a newcomer, why not join in the fun?

Inshore racing

Whether you’re an experienced sailor or eager to try racing, the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s inshore programme offers something for every boat and experience level. Our season features a variety of racing styles – from relaxed and social to fast-paced and tactical – set against the stunning backdrop of Wellington Harbour. While you need to be a member to participate regularly, there are options for more casual involvement, and boats from other local clubs are always welcome.

We have something for everyone: midweek Twilight Races during the height of summer, quirky and enjoyable Special Races, and early morning Two-Handed events that enhance your skills before the afternoon racing begins. Saturdays offer a variety of race types: Short, sharp ‘round the cans’ harbour courses – quick races close to home that are ideal for refining your crew work and tactics. Longer-format Fleet and Interclub Races take you further afield for a great day out on the water and some friendly competition. When winter arrives, we keep the sails up with a regular Sunday series and winter Two-Handed races to keep you warm and in tune with your boat. Whether you're in it for the silverware or the stories back at the bar, you’ll find your place at RPNYC.

Offshore racing

If you’re ready to explore beyond the harbour, our offshore racing programme offers adventure, challenge, and camaraderie. With a rich history since our first offshore race in 1911, we’re New Zealand’s only yacht club with a continuous annual offshore series since the 1920s. Whether dreaming of blue-water cruising, prepping for international regattas, or seeking overnight racing thrills, our programme has something for you.

Our Offshore Season comprises a series of races across Cook Strait and beyond, including Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, and Akaroa. With courses testing seamanship, navigation, and teamwork, many races include social raft-ups in sheltered bays for crews to relax and share stories over drinks. Cook Strait’s rapidly changing tides and winds keep sailors alert – if you can sail here, you can sail anywhere.

We welcome all boats meeting safety requirements, from large offshore cruisers to smaller yachts looking to gain experience. Our Sailing Committee and offshore community support newcomers with guidance, mentoring, and shared knowledge. Safety is a priority; we’ll help prepare your boat and crew to meet necessary standards. Many crews train for longer passages during the championship – consider it your launchpad to the Pacific or beyond.

Offshore racing is not just about competition; it’s about facing challenges, supporting your crew, and gaining memorable stories. If you’re eager to challenge yourself, learn new skills, and join Wellington’s offshore sailing whanau, we’d love to see you on the water.

Special events

Interclub Series – 3 Clubs, 3 Races, 2 Divisions, 1 Trophy

The Interclub Series is a friendly and competitive event among Wellington’s three keelboat clubs: Royal Port Nicholson, Evans Bay, and Lowry Bay. Each club hosts a race that coincides with their season-opening day, with boats competing in two divisions for overall points and bragging rights.

The series is open to a wide range of yachts and crews. It allows you to represent your club, connect with fellow sailors, and enjoy spirited racing. Whether you aim to win or just participate, there’s a place for you.

Join the action, represent your club, and race for the trophy. As the new sailing season approaches, entry details and sailing instructions will be posted on the Sailing Notice Board.

RPNYC Ambassador's Trophy & Commodore’s Trophy Race – a celebrated finale

The Ambassador’s Trophy, held alongside the Commodore’s Trophy Race, is our closing event for the sailing season. This joint race celebrates the enduring bond between RPNYC and the diplomatic community, inviting members of the Wellington-based diplomatic corps to join us in honouring a mutual appreciation for the sea, sport, and international friendship.

Open to all keelboats and trailer boats, the race delivers a fitting end to the season – merging competitive sailing with a welcoming spirit of hospitality and camaraderie. It offers an opportunity for club members and guests to unite on the water, recognising the important relationships between RPNYC and the various embassies and high commissions present in New Zealand.

The Navy Cup – celebrating our naval connection

It’s no surprise that RPNYC shares a long-standing connection with the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), dating back to its formation in 1941. Over the years, many of our members have served with both the RNZN and the Royal Navy Reserves, and that tradition continues today.

Our ties remain strong with the Wellington-based HMNZS Olphert (RNZVR) and HMNZS Wakefield (RNZN), whose messes both hold honorary membership with the club.

The Navy Cup is a highlight of our racing calendar – a chance to honour these close connections. Navy personnel join RPNYC crews for a day of friendly but competitive racing, camaraderie on and off the water, and – of course – a tot or two of rum in the wardroom.

If you’re a member of the RNZN or RNZVR, you’re warmly invited to take part. Keep an eye on the racing calendar for this year’s Navy Cup date, or email sailing@rpnyc.org.nz to get involved.

Port Nicholson Regatta - Wellington’s premier racing weekend

The Port Nicholson Regatta is the highlight of the RPNYC racing calendar – a weekend of competitive racing, great hospitality, and the best of Wellington sailing. Attracting keelboats from across the region, the regatta combines serious racing with a welcoming, club-focused atmosphere that celebrates everything we love about our harbour and our sailing community.

With multiple divisions catering to a range of boats and experience levels, the regatta offers something for everyone – from seasoned campaigners to new crews keen to experience the thrill of racing in one of New Zealand’s most dynamic sailing environments. Off the water, you’ll find great food, live music, and legendary RPNYC hospitality waiting at the clubhouse each evening.

A special highlight of the 2025 regatta was the introduction of the Wellington Classic. This race pays homage to the historic regatta courses of the late 19th century, offering a nostalgic yet competitive experience for sailors. Participants will vie for the Jessie Logan 1890 Cup, with prize money set at the original 1890s amount of 10 pounds and 8 shillings – adjusted for inflation, of course.

Whether you’re a regular on the local circuit or looking to join in for the first time, the Port Nicholson Regatta is your chance to be part of Wellington’s most iconic keelboat event.

Cruising and fun

Easter cruise

The RPNYC Easter cruise is a much-loved tradition, giving members the chance to enjoy a relaxed long weekend exploring the stunning Marlborough Sounds. Weather permitting, a fleet of club boats crosses Cook Strait to spend a few days cruising sheltered bays, enjoying shared meals, beach walks, and sunset drinks in one of Aotearoa’s most beautiful cruising grounds.

It’s a great way to unwind, connect with fellow sailors, and experience the social side of club sailing. All are welcome – check the club calendar or email cruising@rpnyc.org.nz for details on this year’s plan.

Fun 'race' days

RPNYC’s special fun race days are all about enjoying time on the water with a twist. From mystery destinations and virtual treasure hunts to light-hearted skills challenges, these events are designed for laughter, teamwork, and trying something a bit different. There’s no pressure – bring your sense of adventure and a crew ready to have a good time.

If the weather plays along, the day often wraps up with a relaxed raft-up – the perfect chance to swap stories and toast a great day on the harbour. Keep an eye on the calendar and join the fun!
