The Wellington Ocean Sports Schools Safe Boating Programme is charging along despite the cooler temperatures!! Last week in conjunction with Ignite Sports Trust we took a group of sports ambassadors from Wainuiomata High School through the 2 hour safe boating session.

Ignite Sports who focus on improving outcomes for youth through sport used the analogy of the yacht to describe the importance of having good character in our lives, reinforcing this out on Wellington's windy and wet harbour.

It has been a fantastic year for the Wellington Ocean Sports Schools Safe Boating Programme. Over 1000 children have undertaken our 2 hour safe boating session in the last 12 months thanks to various community funders and we still have a small amount of Pub Charity funding to offer Hutt Schools. We have also delivered NCEA courses to various schools covering – learn to sail, Coastguard Day Skipper and Boatmaster. We will be applying for further funding to support the delivery of 2 hour safe boating sessions and are also working with funders for the delivery of NCEA courses over the winter months.

Recreational boating is a major contributor to New Zealand’s appalling drowning statistics and we are well underway to addressing that through our school safe boating programme which is endorsed by both Coastguard Boating Education and Water Safety New Zealand.. Check out our promotional video.

For those who are interested there is a power point presentation we can send you with further details on our entire schools programme.

NCEA Credits Available

Wellington Ocean Sports offer year 12 and 13 students the Coastguard Boating Education course “Day Skipper”. This 15 hour theory based course offers students 6 level 2 NCEA credits (26542), covers essential boating knowledge and safety, and is a tangible pathway to a career in the marine industry. We are also offering a two hour practical sessions as part of the course.

The course is run at Wellington Ocean Sports during the school day and at times that suit the school. Day Skipper also leads on to the sought after Boatmaster qualification which attracts 16 level 3 credits (26541).

NCEA Keelboat Learn to Sail course

Our 28 hour learn to sail course offers a comprehensive practical and theoretical grounding in sailing and there are also 9 level two NCEA credits available for successful participants. This course is also run at Wellington Ocean Sports during the school day at times that suit the school.

Wellington Ocean Sports also offer a number of follow on opportunities to schools, students and their families. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to access ocean sports. Follow on opportunities include our monthly open days on the last Saturday of each month where anyone can come along and “have a go” at ocean sports for only a gold coin donation. Lessons and club membership for every sport we offer and a school holiday programme that is run every school holidays offering students further opportunity to participate in ocean sports.

So don’t delay!! Now is the time that we need to book delivery over the next two terms, and we are keen to come out and talk to any schools that are interested.
