The team embraces the Wellington Spirit … anything can be achieved from Wellington and you can do anything in Wellington. When our team competes on the world stage they take this spirit with them. When the world looks back at Wellington they see this spirit.
Inspiration for the Wellington Spirit Sailing Team is drawn from Ngake and Whataitai, the two Taniwha that formed Te Whanganui A Tara (Wellington harbour). Ngake broke free from what was once a lake and in the process established the entrance to Wellington harbour. Whataitai tried to break out of the lake as well but became stuck. The spirit of Ngake now takes on the world while the spirit of Whataitai remains in the harbour to watch over Wellington.
Wellington Spirit's long term goal is to have sailors competing in and winning on the world stage in Ocean Racing, Match Racing and Olympic sailing disciplines.
The initial priority for the team is the Match Racing discipline and a three step plan has been put in place.
1. Gain qualification for the World Match Racing Tour Events 2012-2013
2. Establish Wellington Spirit as a Tour Card Holder by 2014
3. Win the World Match Racing Championship by 2016
