World champion Wellington sailors Matthew Steven and Josh Junior have been selected to lead the Wellington Spirit Sailiing Team’s campaign to win the World Match Racing Championship.

Steven has won the Under 21 OK Dinghy World Champion crown, was a member of New Zealand team which won the World University Match Racing championship, has twice won the New Zaland Youth Match Racing national championship and was the 2011 New Zealand National Match Racing Champion. In 2013 Matthew will be sharing his Wellington Spirit duties with sailing in various regattas such as Youth Americas Cup.
Junior is a past winner of the Under 21 Olympic Laser Class World Champion crown, was a member of New Zealand team which won the World University Match Racing championship, has twice won the New Zealand Youth Match Racing national championship, was ranked 2nd in the world in the Laser Olympic Class in 2011 and is currently a member of the New Zealand Sailing Team campaigning in the Finn Class for the 2016 Olympics.

“We believe anything can be achieved from Wellington,” explained Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club CEO Dean Stanley “and this is the Wellington Spirit that these sailors fully embrace”.
“Wellington Spirit Ltd have set the team a target of winning the World Match Racing Championship by 2016 and will be committing the necessary resource to make sure this is achieved” said Stanley.
