Sickness effects youth scheme performance on day one in Perth

 20130130

Hi all, Greetings from Perth.

Day one turned out to be especially challenging for the team. This was due to Mackenzie getting heat stroke. He showed a huge amount of character with his determination to stay out on the water with us ... vomiting several times in between and during racing!

Unfortunately he pushed too hard and passed out twice and was taken to hospital and put on a saline drip. We have been pumping the fluids in all night to give him a chance at sailing with us tomorrow.

We were lucky enough to get Lachie Gilmour (the younger brother of David and Sam) to sail with us on the mainsheet which saw Adam shifting to the unfamiliar role of the bow.
We struggled to gel and get in sync without Mackenzie and this was made worse by the Race Officer racing all the way through the afternoon, only letting us come ashore at 7pm!

So it was a very long and eventful day. We had some promising results, but struggled when the breeze got up as Mike, Adam and Stu had to pick up Mackenzie's jobs on the boat. Lots to work on and the focus for tomorrow is to nail our roles on the boat and sail cleanly.

It's 8.45pm and everyone is knackered and in bed! Stay tuned for tomorrows update!

Cheers, Adam, Stu, Mike, Macka and Tim
